30-48” - one year old seedlings

Love it or hate it, black locust is here to stay. The native range is disputed for this tree, and some NRCS offices consider it to be an “invasive” species. We don’t really jive with that language here at the Forest Exchange, and think that this tree probably has a place in your landscape given the right context and proper management practices. Whether Black Locust was present in NY prior to European colonization is up for debate, but there’s no denying the positive attributes of this plant when placed in the right context for growth.

Black locust is an exceptionally fast growing tree even in poor soils as it fixes atmospheric nitrogen into available soil nitrogen, often improving growth rates of neighboring plants.

Some contexts that black locust excels in are: as a living hedge, for ruminant livestock fodder, in silvopasture systems to improve nutritional content of forage plants, honey production, cut and split into fence posts, used for firewood, as the pioneer species for reforestation efforts, or used for outdoor furniture, decking, etc. This seed comes to us from a stand of black locust trees in an arboretum in Upstate NY. The parent trees are pinnate (tall, straight single stem) and accustomed to harsh winter conditions.
