Black Walnut (juglans nigra)
36-60” - 2 year old seedling
One of the most valued timber trees that can be grown in the northeast, but that’s only half of the story. The black walnut has a long history as a staple food across much of the eastern and midwestern US. Favors deep, rich soils. Our walnuts are all started in air prune beds, which generate a dense, fibrous root system rather than a single tap root as is typical of walnuts.
All of our seedlings this year came from trees that produced a crop during a historic drought in 2022. Some are wild seedlings, some from unnamed grafted cultivars from McDaniel's Nut Grove, some from Cornell Arboretum. All have fairly large nuts, and good cracking qualities.
