Bur Oak (quercus macrocarpa)

Bur Oak (quercus macrocarpa)

$75.00Price

36-60” - 2-3 year old seedlings

Drought tolerant, cold hardy, heat tolerant. Huge wildlife food value, timber value, and great potential for human food value due to the low tannic acid content in the large acorns. Supports an enormous variety of both vertebrate and invertebrate life. Amenable to planting in urban settings, where it creates abundant shade relatively quickly. Beautiful fall color that hangs on well after frosts.

Bur oak’s native range is pretty astounding. Occurring naturally from Texas to Maine and throughout the Midwest in the US and throughout Eastern and Central Canada from Quebec to Alberta, it’s safe to say that the Bur Oak is right at home nearly anywhere you’d want to plant one. Bur oak is the most vigorous oak we grow, with our second leaf seedlings approaching 6 feet, and third leaf seedlings well over 10 feet tall in zone 5.

These are mixed origin seedling trees of Quercus Macrocarpa. Seed sources include: John Hershey's famous nursery in Downingtown, PA, an "Ashworth" Oak from Central NY, as well as some seed from Central Illinois.
