Hazelnut (corylus avellana)
24-36” - one year old seedlings
Both varieties we are offering in 2024 are products of breeding efforts by Oregon State University. In the Eastern USA, seedlings of OSU cultivars should be considered as a valuable part of the genetic pool for hazelnut growers. As with all trees, hazelnut seedlings will be different from the cultivars they come from, with some seedlings displaying exceptional qualities. We believe these hazelnut seedlings have a solid place in eastern orchards as pollinator plants, potential new cultivars, and to the backyard grower as a relatively inexpensive way to produce your own hazelnuts. This seed comes to us from an orchard setting, with all of the trees present being grafted or layered cultivars selected for productivity and disease resistance.
Jefferson Seedlings: Large, well filled shells yield a flavorful nut. Productive, vigorous, and highly resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight. Some of our seedlings have begun producing catkins in their 4th season. Has a long pollination window.
Yamhill Seedlings: Relatively small nuts, but of great flavor and quality. Yamhill is a smaller tree, up to 10 feet tall. Productive, vigorous, and complete resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Popular with commercial growers in Western US.
